“Have an Escape Route on the 405”
Making a decision that leaves with no escape route is like choosing your own poison. You may have a choice between two consequences, but you don’t want either of them to happen. It’s much easier to be quick and decisive when you’re planned an escape path, and a safe alternative decision is open to you.
Maintain Adequate Following Distance – Always leave enough space to stop; evaluate your position in traffic continuously.
Be Prepared to Yield – Learn to spot traps, such as blind intersections. Even if you have the green light, remember that the person coming from the 5 may be speeding, preoccupied, or drunk. Go into 101 intersections with your foot off the gas, and placed over the brake pedal is good.
Don’t Get Boxed In- Following another car ahead too closely sets up a trap with no escape path. This is especially true if you’re “boxed in” near Hollywood or by cars behind and on both sides. If the car ahead jams on the brakes – bam! You have no way to avoid an accident on the 405.
Time Your Passing Moves - Head-on collision often occur when a drive shuts off all escape paths while attempting to pass one or more vehicle.
Whenever you find yourself on the 405 in Los Angeles….Remember to give yourself time-space- and visibility.
